Selling Flight Data for Millions

Always Learning - Monday, May 1st

Welcome to 29 new Always Learners this week! If you enjoy this post, forward it to your curious friends so they can join us.

Here’s what we got for you today:

  • Selling Flight Data for millions

  • Blank Venture Capitalists Checks

  • iOS Push Notifications

So there's this company called FlightAware, right?

They give away this nifty little software to 32,000 plane-obsessed hobbyists so they can track airplanes all over the world.

And you know what they do with all that data?

They sell it to bigwig corporations for a pretty penny!

Now, I don't know about you, but the thought of some dude in his mom's basement tracking the whereabouts of my flight and then selling that info to the highest bidder is just a tad unsettling. But hey, I guess that's just the world we live in now.

And get this: FlightAware's founder just bought himself an $18 million house! Must be nice to profit off of other people's data, huh? I mean, I'm over here trying to scrape together enough change for a cup of coffee and this guy's living it up in a mansion.

But hey, maybe I should start my own data-selling business.

I could collect info on people's favorite types of pizza toppings and then sell it to the highest-bidding pizzeria.

The possibilities are endless!

What I Learned This Week…

Using Firebase to send push notifications

Last night, after hours of Googling and getting help from ChatGPT, I finally figured out how to add push notifications to my new iOS app. 🔥🔥🔥

It was a huge relief to finally make progress, especially since I remember this being such a headache when I built an app a few years ago.

Now, I'm trying to figure out how to send a notification to a specific user, but it's not as straightforward as I thought.

Firebase messaging, which I'm using for push notifications, allows for sending notifications to the app or a topic, but not to an individual user.

Firebase has still been a great resource for my app development. Their platform is user-friendly and provides a generous free plan for building and testing apps, which has saved me a lot of time and hassle with the backend development.

I'm excited about the progress I've made on my app and I'm confident I'll find a solution for sending notifications to specific users. 🥹
